Living with Squeals, Thumps & Scraping? 3 Signs Your Heater Needs Help

When it comes to your heater, you probably watch for physical signs that there's something wrong with your system. For instance, you know to call the repair technician when your heater won't turn on, or when it cycles continuously. You might even know to call for assistance when your heater starts emitting burning odors. However, you might not know that your heater may start making odd noises when it's in need of assistance. If you start hearing strange noises coming from your heater, it's a good idea to pay attention to them. They may be trying to tell you something.

Here are three clues that the sounds you're hearing are actually you're heater letting you know that it needs help.

You're Hearing a Scraping Sound

If you've started hearing the sound of metal scraping on metal, and you only hear it when the heater is on, you've got a problem affecting either your blower wheel or the motor mount. Both problems will affect the way your heater functions. However, if the motor mount works loose, you could lose function of your heater altogether. That's because once the motor mount breaks the motor will no longer be engaged. As soon as you hearing the sound of metal scraping coming from your heater, you need to call for service.

There's a Constant Thumping

A thumping sound is never a good sign, especially when it's coming from your heater. In most cases, a constant thumping sound is a sure sign that your blower wheel is out of balance. When that happens, the blower wheel will spin similar to how a washing machine spins when it's out of balance. The result will be a loud thumping sound while your heater is on. You may also hear a loud vibrating sound at the same time. If you're living with the constant sound of thumping coming from your heater, it's time to get it repaired.

There's an Annoying Squeal in Your Ears

There's nothing worse than living with the sound of squealing in your ears. Unfortunately, that's exactly what you'll be dealing with if your heater belts are having a problem. It's not uncommon for belts to squeal loudly when they're loose, or when they're missing out on necessary lubrication. As soon as you start hearing the tell-tale sound of squealing coming from your heater, it's time to take a look at your belts.

If you're hearing unfamiliar noises coming from your heater, don't ignore them: call local HVAC contractors. Taking care of the noises as soon as you hear them will help you avoid serious problems with your heater.
